Whitlocks Estate Agents are proud sponsors of Pagham Pram Race, the oldest pram race in the world!
The historical event has been running for over 70 years and takes place every year on Boxing Day, in and around Pagham, Bognor Regis, West Sussex.
In 1946 a group of demobbed servicemen decided they would like to do something fun over the Christmas period to bring the community together, so they came up with the idea of a pram race.
One person pushing the pram and the other as a baby, sitting, often precariously inside it.
One of their original rules was to both drink a pint of beer at three of the village pubs.
The first place prize back then was a Christmas fruit cake and any monies raised would be used to support local causes.
Come rain or shine the race takes place.
It starts at The Mill on Pagham Road and the Entrants stop off for their pints of beer at The Bear and The Lamb Inn pubs and the final stop is Maria’s Café (formally The Kings Beach Public House before it closed).
The course total is approximately 3 miles and finishes at The Lamb Inn car park.
The race starts at 11am and there have been as many as 60 Pram Entrants.
With many of the prams looking more like fantastically designed floats and usually accompanied by contestants in topical fancy dress costumes.
2006 saw Entrants from Australia and even the USA! Travelling across the world to participate in a truly fantastic and honourable event in our village!
Over the years, many thousands of pounds have been raised for wonderful local causes both from entry monies, and of course, donations from the thousands of members of the public that line the route to support the event.
The President of this timeless event is Derek Bell MBE, former Le Mans winner and local Pagham farmer. Derek has been involved with the race since he was 17 years old.
All the proceeds from the race (in keeping with the tradition), as well as other fundraising events that are organised throughout the year, are distributed to local causes by the means of a Helping Others Grant.
The Pram Race Committee broke a record in 2020 and distributed grants of a whopping £20,000 to good causes and over £86,800 over the last 6 years.
